Abstract

Objectives: To determine the indications and prognosis Foley catheter use in labour induction. Material and Method: Retrospective and descriptive study from 01 July 2022 to 31 June 2023 at the Kara University Hospital maternity unit. All deliveries in the department following Foley catheter insertion during the study period were included. Results: The rate of Foley catheter use was 8%. The average age of pregnant women was 26.9 years, with extremes of 17 and 42 years. They were nulliparous (35.5%) and primiparous (22.6%). The term was exceeded in 54.8% of cases. Indications were dominated by overdue and prolonged term (48.4%), followed by preeclampsia (11.3%) and death in utero (9.7%). The initial Bishop score was unfavourable in all pregnant women. When the catheter was dropped, the Bishop score was favourable in 77.4% of cases. The catheter alone was sufficient to induce labour in 31.2% of cases. Administration of oxytocin was necessary in 65.7% of cases to induce labour. Delivery was vaginal in 74.2% of cases. The newborns had an Apgar ≥ 8 in 80.6% of cases. Conclusion: The use of Foley catheter to induce labour reduces the rate of caesarean delivery, with a favourable maternal and foetal prognosis.
